Open XML Converter
Open XML Converter is a great tool. It will enable you to convert Open XML files that are used by newer versions of Microsoft Word, to a format that older versions of Word for the Mac can use.
Office 2008 on the Mac and Office 2007 for Windows utilize the new docx Open XML format. By using the conversion software, you can view these newer file formats on older versions of Microsoft office.

To install and run this program you have to be running OSX on your Apple Mac. There are a few other minor requirements and dependencies, but they should not be a big issue. Just make sure that all other programs are closed when you try to install this software.
